Web forensics questions

Integrity and authenticity of web evidence

Integrity records help demonstrate whether preserved artifacts changed after acquisition, while authenticity requires a broader assessment of source, context, method and corroborating evidence. No single technical control proves that every statement displayed online is true.

How can website evidence be authenticated?

Authentication normally combines source identification, acquisition testimony or records, surrounding context, timestamps, integrity checks, custody history and corroborating evidence. The exact legal test depends on the jurisdiction and proceeding, so technical preservation should support—not replace—the required legal foundation.

Is a screenshot sufficient evidence?

A screenshot can be useful evidence, but by itself it commonly omits the URL, surrounding context, source material, acquisition conditions, integrity record and investigator actions. Its weight depends on authentication and the complete circumstances, so important online material should usually be preserved with additional context.

What is a cryptographic hash in digital evidence?

A cryptographic hash is a value calculated from digital data that changes when the data changes. Recording and later recalculating a suitable hash can help verify that a preserved file remains bit-for-bit consistent, but it does not prove that the file was truthful or identify its author.

What does an evidence timestamp prove?

A trustworthy timestamp can support that a particular digital record or hash existed or was processed at a stated time. It does not prove when the underlying event happened, that the content was accurate, or that the displayed author created it.

What is a digital chain of custody?

A digital chain of custody records who collected, possessed, transferred, accessed or handled evidence and when relevant events occurred. It supports accountability and continuity but must be maintained through organizational procedure, access controls and accurate records.

How can you detect whether acquired web evidence changed?

Calculate and record cryptographic hashes for preserved artifacts, protect originals from modification and verify them during transfer or review. A hash mismatch indicates that the data differs, but further analysis is needed to determine what changed, why and whether the change matters.

Why is network traffic useful in web forensics?

Network information can document requests, responses, headers, redirects and resources exchanged during collection, providing context not visible in the rendered page. Encryption, browser behaviour and capture configuration affect what is available, and network traffic alone does not prove source authenticity or user identity.

Can a man-in-the-middle attack affect web evidence?

A compromised network or interception system can alter content before it reaches the browser. Certificate, TLS and network context may reveal indicators of interception, but no capture method can guarantee detection of every manipulation; suspicious findings require broader network and endpoint investigation.

Does a forensic capture prove that a website is authentic?

No. It documents what a source presented at acquisition time and protects the integrity of the resulting record. Domain ownership, publisher identity, account control and content truth may require registry, provider, witness, server or other corroborating evidence.

How can another examiner verify web evidence?

Provide the preserved originals, acquisition metadata, hashes, timestamps, activity history, custody records, reports and documented limitations through a controlled handoff. The reviewer can verify integrity and assess method without recreating a webpage that may already have changed.
